Since 1981, the annual Black Maria Film and Video Festival, an international juried competition and award tour, has been fulfilling its mission to advocate, exhibit and reward cutting edge works from independent film and videomakers. The festival is known for its national public exhibition program, which features a variety of bold contemporary works drawn from the annual collection of 50 award winning films and videos. The Black Maria is recognized by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an Academy Award qualifying festival for short films (documentary, animation, and live action) and was awarded the New Jersey Governor's Award for Excellence in 2002 and the New Jersey State Council of the Arts Certificate of Excellence in 2003.

Not only is this a great festival, Santa Barbara is beautiful, and I am going to do my best to attend my screening(s), even if the event IS sandwiched between my screenings at the Spokane International Film Festival. The Spokane International Film Festival, now in its eighth year, is a small, selective, invitation-only festival of world-class films. They are chosen from the very best features, documentaries and shorts that have been made around the world during the past two years but have not yet been commercially released for wide distribution. In fact they are the same films seen each year at the Cannes, New York or Toronto film festivals, and the director travels widely to screen and select them. Founded in 1982, each year the festival shows more than 200 short films in five different sections exploring the diversity and richness of the short film - from new film to retrospective programmes, from fiction film, documentaries and experimental film to animations. As a film-maker friend of mine put it: "An Academy nomination is one thing, but UPPSALA! Now THAT is the big-time!" :) (It should be noted that TMP has not yet been nominated for an Academy Award, but it HAS qualified for consideration, so...fingers crossed!)

The God on Film Festival is designed to provide filmmakers with an opportunity to showcase their talents and reward them for their exploration of spiritual themes. By the way , The Mantis Parable is nominated for BEST Under 10 Minute Short Film in the competition. This one-day festival takes place in the Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom. This dedicated animation festival is extremely large, attracting an audience of over 65,000 people. As much as I would love to attend this wonderful festival and explore Brazil, I will be unable to attend. :(

Cortoons is a festival that screens at the Cinema Nuovo Olimpia in the very heart of Rome.. The festival is associated with other large animation festivals from around the world, and financially helps support U.N.I.C.E.F. As much as I LOVE Rome, I will be unable to attend this screening. :(

This is a small festival close to where I grew up in California. I've taken the opportunity to screen here so I can view TMP with family and friends from the area.
